After you read this short article, you will have learned how to find out the inner most secrets about the performance of your ads on the Content Network and what you must then do to improve your campaigns to make them more profitable.

Most people back away from the Content Network, thinking that it is not for them. And that is certainly good advice if you are new to AdWords, advertising on a small budget or starting a new campaign in an unfamiliar niche.

But one could also say that the Content Network represents a vast market place within which you can advertise your products or services. And if you run your campaigns in the right way, it can be a valuable source of new business as well as a means of establishing your brand throughout the world.

Unquestionably, if you are going to be successful on the Content Network, then you need to monitor the performance of your ads very carefully and adjust your campaigns regularly so that your ads appear only on those websites that are going to bring you true value.

The problem is, how do you know which websites are working for you and which are just lining the pockets of Google and the website owner?

Fortunately Google have provided you with the “Placement Performance” Report that tells you everything you need to know about your ads performance on the Content Network.

Here are our top five tips to getting the most from your report:)

1. Think Conversions Not Clicks

If you think of AdWords as a popularity contest where the winner is the contestant that attracts the most traffic to their website, then you’re in for a very expensive shock.

The most important statistic in any AdWords campaign is conversions. When advertising on the Content Network you must therefore have some kind of conversion tracking software installed.

2. Sort Your Data To Give It More Meaning

The huge amounts of information that the Placement Performance Report can provide you about your ads campaigns can sometimes seem overwhelming. It’s therefore very important that you sort your data so that you can focus on the information that is most important to you.

For instance, if it’s the most popular websites on which your ads are appearing you want to focus on, then order your report by number of clicks or to focus on your spending, order the report by the costs field.

3. Don’t Take Action Based On Insufficient Data

At the outset, your ads will be appearing on lots of different websites throughout the Content Network and your total costs will probably be quite high.

It is important not to panic and start to make decisions based on insufficient data. Sites that at first produce few clicks can sometimes appear not very useful, but later can start to convert profitably once more clicks have accumulated.

4. Prepare For Lower Click-Through Rates

The fact of the matter is that ads on the Content Network don’t get clicked on as often as those on the Search Network. Google appreciates this and so don’t make the mistake of thinking that your ads are performing badly if your click-through rates seem to be very low.

5. Optimise Your Campaigns

The real power of the Placement Performance report is in the way that it can help you to optimise your ads campaign and make advertising on the Content Network much more profitable.

If you notice in the report that your ads are appearing on websites or pages that are not relevant then take action to remove them by adding negative keywords, excluding the entire domain or even excluding an entire category. You can do this easily using the Site and Category Exclusion tool.

Final thoughts

When you start using the Content Network, it is very likely that you’ll loose money in the initial stages of your advertising campaign. But, act every day on the information provided in your Placement Performance report and you’ll soon have your campaigns running at a profit.

Saving for Retirement as a Minority

March 12th, 2010

One area that has recently been under study is the reason minorities aren’t investing as much as they could. While there is an overall need to start planning for the future, particularly retirement, African Americans and Hispanics are among the groups that invest the least. Only 66 percent of African Americans and 65 percent of Hispanics working in companies that have retirement plans invest in the 401(k) options that are offered. This is compared to 77 percent of their White coworkers and 75 percent of Asian employees. According to research done by Hewitt Associates, there are quite a few cultural reasons as to why minorities don’t save money. One of the reasons given for African Americans is trust issues with financial institutions like banks, as well as with those professionals responsible for overseeing their retirement plans. These issues are well-founded; the banking world has long been a “good old boys’ club,” run and organized by well-to-do white males. Few steps have been made to make investing welcoming for both women and minorities, and it can be difficult to get past the psychological barriers of being told what to do by a group of investment professionals who typically operate by offering rules and regulations rather than by offering explanations and advice.

For both Hispanics and African Americans, the issue of large extended families also comes into play. In both cultures, it is much more common for grown children to care for parents or even aunts and uncles as they get older. It is quite possible to have up to 10 or more people living on just one or two incomes, therefore making it difficult to save up or invest for the future. This also means that more minorities withdraw from their 401(k) plans, especially when illness or financial hardship falls on a loved one.

Does this mean that minorities shouldn’t look at investment as a viable option? Not at all. It does, however, mean that African Americans, Hispanics, and other minorities may need to take a different approach when planning for savings and retirement. Some techniques that are working well include the following:

- Work for a company that has adjusted its 401(k) to make enrollment compulsory or even more beneficial. Companies that add incentives for investing tend to have a higher rate of participation from minorities.

- Take full advantage of any incentives to invest that your employer is offering. If they are matching your investment, make sure you put in as much as you can afford each month and maximize your investment. – Pay yourself first. By setting up automatic payments to a separate savings account each month when your check comes in, you won’t be tempted to spend it on something else. This is a great way to steadily save up cash, then invest it in one lump sum to essentially multiply what you have saved.

- Find a financial advisor you trust. Your financial advisor is your partner in savings and investment plans. When you find someone you can have open and honest dialogues with, you will be more likely to feel comfortable with the decisions you make as a team.

Because the barriers to financial freedom are cultural, social, and financial, it can be difficult for minorities to save and invest. However, everyone deserves a chance at having a solid investment portfolio, savings account, and retirement plan – regardless of your race, gender, economic background, or lifestyle.

Silent Charity Auction Item or Live Charity Auction Item: Does It Matter Where It’s Sold?

March 12th, 2010

Get Free Content For Your Site

As part of my auction consulting services with clients, I’m often asked for my opinion about items. “Should we include this airfare?” one will inquire. Or, “How should we promote this?”

If my client is only conducting a silent auction, I am never asked whether an item belongs in the silent auction or live auction – there’s no choice! But if the auction fundraiser includes both components, the “silent versus live” debate often arises.

In this article, I want to discuss how an auction item can be affected by its placement in a silent section versus the live auction.

One of my clients has a wonderful patron who looks like Santa Claus. He’s a friendly guy and looks remarkably like Santa. All around the world, people stop him to comment on his resemblance to St. Nick.

In 2008 the charity created a fun auction item package in which this patron agreed to dress as Santa and attend a holiday party. The item sold in the live auction almost $2000. It was so popular, we might have even sold it twice.

In 2009, the item was moved into the silent auction. There were two active bidders, and it sold for around $600.

Why the difference? Marketing. There are specific marketing techniques that should be used for silent auction items, and a different set of marketing techniques that should be used for live auction items.

Let’s just take a look at the marketing opportunities available for a live auction item during an event. At most benefit auctions, the silent auction concludes before the live auction starts. So, live auction items can be viewed and featured during the silent auction. This leaves more time to educate bidders on the items and generate excitement.

The education and excitement building continues as the live auction begins and the auctioneer describes each package. This might be summarized as the difference between car sales happening in the classified section of a newspaper – if anyone still does that- and a great TV commercial featuring a car. It is hard to build the enthusiasm for silent auction items to the same level that comes with live auction items.

I’ll address marketing techniques appropriate for silent auction items in the future.

Even when all marketing principals followed, there will be a difference in sale price because of the method of sale and the marketing to support it. Putting an item in the live auction will always garner it more money than what it can bring in during a silent auction.

Keep this point in mind as you structure your fundraising auction to maximize revenue.

Learn to Write – Becoming a Better Writer

March 12th, 2010

There are hundreds of people walking around with the dream to become a children’s writer. However, they may be unsure of where to start or don’t how if they can learn to write. Like anything, writing a children’s book doesn’t happen overnight and there are specific techniques you can use to increase your chances of both completing a viable manuscript and being published.

Become an Observer

When it comes to writing fiction, especially children’s books, it’s all in the details. Most people go through their day being a part of the action. However, to be a productive and effective writer, you need to begin to look through the lens, so to speak. Just as a photographer has to take a step back in order to capture a beautiful shot, an author also has to spend more time observing- surroundings, scenarios, conflicts and human nature.

Make it an Automatic Habit

Once you start observing, you might find yourself analyzing every situation you find yourself in, with your book or plot in mind. This is a productive exercise. Keep a secondary dialogue going in your head with observations on what is happening around you.

Inspiration is a Myth

While there are certainly times when you will touch those computer keys and the story will seemingly fly off your fingers, those events are usually the exception. Most inspiration is the result of good, old fashioned discipline. The more you do something, the more opportunities you will find for real success.

Make Time for Creativity

When you discuss writing with other authors, almost everyone can relate to the classic case of writer’s block. The solution of this is to put that butt in the chair, plain and simple. Schedule your writing time and don’t let anything interfere. If your family life is distracting, get up early. Those are generally the most productive hours to learn to write anyways. Don’t get dressed, check email or eat breakfast until you have put in your time. An hour each morning should be sufficient to work on your children’s book.

It’s Not All About the Good Stuff

If you’ve ever been in a group of people while you listened to someone relate a truly horrible situation, you know just how interesting these stories are for both the storyteller and the group of listeners. What you might not realize is how you can use your embarrassing moments to improve your writing skills. Every story is built around a conflict, after all. Detail a particularly embarrassing moment, including as many details as possible. This will help you with your descriptive writing and also train your brain to recognize both details, and the human nature that is behind them. When writing a children’s book, use incidences from your childhood. Most good children’s book connect with the audience, so this exercise is very useful to your overall success. You may even find just the plot that you are looking for.

Make Goals

Some of the most successful people use goal setting as a tool to remain productive. Goals can be very important for an author. So much of writing is a personal endeavor, often with very little feedback. Make little goals as you learn to write and devise rewards that you find motivating to mark these goals. This can keep you going, even if you are unsure if you still have it in you. If you need outside encouragement, find a friend or mentor to report your goals and progress to on a weekly basis.

Learn to Write- The Pros and Cons of Using Rhyme in Children’s Books!

March 12th, 2010

Get Free Content For Your Site

Oh, the joys of rhyme! When you want to learn to write, you will inevitably play around with this concept when it comes to children’s books. Why is that? Simply put, rhyme is fun! Kids love it, and adults find it clever and enjoyable to read aloud to little ones. However, many an author has been kicked to the curb for submitting a manuscript that rhymes. In fact, some are even told that it was rejected merely because it rhymed. While that may be a bit off-putting, the fact is that rhyming text is released to the public every single day. There isn’t a flaw in writing a rhyming children’s book, if it’s done properly- and that’s the key word- properly.

Pitfalls and Problems

For those authors that have been told that rhyming is passé, it’s likely because their text was either poorly rhymed, or the plot that was hidden in the text was weak. Rhyming can be very difficult, so many authors who compose rhyming text spend a lot of time focused on the details and organization of their rhyme patterns. This almost always leaves the story itself lacking, especially if you’re just beginning to learn to write. A master at rhyme expertly manipulates words and structure so that every single line supports the essence of the story.

The structure of your story is going to be very important as you learn to write. Before you even begin, you should have a clear plot in mind, along with a strong introductory area, with well developed characters. You can then begin to play with your word choices and build around that firm foundation. Never use words or lines that don’t directly support that base just for the sake of forcing the rhyme.

Why Rhyme?

With so much struggle and heartache that accompanies the attempt to learn to write a rhyming book, many authors ask themselves why they even bother. Since when is something not worth it because it’s difficult? In fact, just the opposite is usually the case: if you have to work at it, the end results are much more fulfilling.

There are plenty of reasons to use rhyme in your children’s books. Frankly, it’s just plain fun; it’s fun to write, and it’s fun to read! A expertly composed rhyming book will always stand above the crowd. Even if the plot and characters are fairly average, a well presented rhyme gives the book a flavor and ambiance that creates a knock-your-socks-off effect.

Another reason to utilize rhyme is that it makes you grow as an author. You may have gotten a bit stuck in your rut when it comes to writing. If that is the case, rhyme can serve as a catalyst for growth. Because it is so difficult to get right, new parts of your brain are activated and the efforts can lead to greater creativity and growth in your craft. Even if your initial attempts aren’t that great, working with rhyme makes you hyper-aware of the nuances of writing, from rhythm to grammar.

As with any initial attempt, it’s a good idea to get feedback when you learn to write in rhyme. Your best bet is to get the reaction of children that belong to your targeted audience. Watch how they handle your manuscript and be aware of weak spots that may need adjusting. It’s also a good idea to have an adult read aloud the text, recording the attempts. This is an easy way to determine where your flow is interrupted and what rhymes might need a bit of attention.

There is more to writing children’s books than you may think. If you have passion and drive to give children well thought about and well developed stories, your on the right track! Learn to write a great children’s book by visiting http://www.learntowriteachildrensbook.com you will find the best resources available to help you achieve success as a children’s author!

Tips to Choosing Practical Financial Literacy Lesson Plans

March 12th, 2010

Record debt, skyrocketing foreclosures and a large number of people suffering from financial stress…sound familiar? Many of the problems people face today could have been avoided if they had received a practical financial education.

Teens and young adults tend to learn more from practical financial literacy lesson plans. Having a practical financial literacy curriculum as support will help you teach important guidelines to your child. This allows them to be more financially responsible in the way they deal with everyday finances as well as long-term expenses. Making sure to instill your spending habits in your child is a very important part of preparing them for financial independence.

Many schools have started offering a financial literacy curriculum to their students, either in the form of economics classes or classes geared specifically towards preparing students financial responsibility in college or independent living.

In today’s age, it is more important than ever that we provide youth with the knowledge they need to make it in the financial real world. Implementing a practical financial literacy course can make a difference that lasts a lifetime. But, how do you choose a financial literacy curriculum that students will actually implement? That is the question that will be answered in this article.

Focus groups have shown that when students receive subpar financial literacy training they report being bored, turned-off, confused and lack the desire to learn more about money matters. The instructors had good intentions when they begin implementing the financial education course; unfortunately for some, the financial lesson plans had the opposite effect.

To ensure your financial education class makes a lasting difference in students lives it is important you choose a financial literacy curriculum that are designed to keep the students engaged and motivated to learn more. Below are seven tips to choosing effective financial literacy lesson plans that will help your students to gain the financial knowledge needed to be successful.

1)Review the Curriculum Designers Background. The average financial literacy curriculum is written by people that lack real world money and business experience. Make sure the financial education lesson plans you choose have been designed by a team of experienced professionals. Look for curriculum that is developed by a team of financially successful entrepreneurs and teachers that have a track record of curriculum development experience. Finding a curriculum that combines top teachers with business leaders will put you immediately on the right track.

2)Find Curriculum that Motivates & Educates. Having reviewed hundreds of financial literacy lesson plans and talked to thousands of youth many of them have been turned off ‘learning about money’. Many students have complained about past financial literacy classes being boring and confusing. A well designed financial literacy curriculum, taught properly, can be a rewarding and entertaining experience. A good test is to review the curriculum late at night and see if it passes the snooze test.

3)Find Lesson Plans that Grow with Students. In a perfect world financial lessons would be taught over time and your students would build their money skills over time. Since this is a luxury most educators will not receive, it is important to choose curriculum that builds on the prior lessons and covers the key principles that make up the foundation knowledge of their education.

4)Lesson Plans Cover the Mental Game of Money. Talk to any financially successful person out there and the majority will agree that the mental game of money serves as a foundation for our financial decisions. It is also well documented that the average person makes most of their financial decisions because of emotional responses, not logic. That is why it is critical that the financial literacy curriculum you choose covers the mental game of money.

5)Financial Success Training Curriculum. The ultimate goal of financial literacy lesson plans is to help our youth reach the level of financial success they desire. Implementing curriculum that focused on providing real world money lessons will not only keep students interested but will also put them on track to achieving financial security.

6)Practical Education before Theory Based Memorization. Although we agree that people should know important financial theories, it is important to find curriculum that focuses on practical financial matters your students will use in the real world before getting into advanced theories. Considering the fact that over 40 million Americans do not have bank accounts, locate curriculum that walks students step-by-step through basic account structure and includes activities that helps to build their financial foundation.

7)Teach with Entertaining & Engaging Curriculum. By the time a student graduates high school many have sat through more than 10,000 classes. With the limited time the subject of financial literacy receives it is vitally important we stand out from the 10,000 other lectures. Choose curriculum that engages the students with activities, multi-media, celebrities, movement, props and other tools to help our students internalize financial literacy lesson plans so they benefit from this knowledge throughout their life.

Maximize the effectiveness of your time and financial literacy class by getting financial literacy curriculum designed to get students excited to learn about money. The confidence that a practical financial education can bring to students will have long-term positive benefits that affect many area of your student’s life.
